Slovak (Slovenský jazyk) is one of the West Slavic languages; it is spoken in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Serbia (in the Vojvodina region, where Slovak is also officially recognised), as well as in Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and Romania. Slovak is related to Czech, Polish, and Sorbian (a language spoken by small communities in Saxony and Brandenburg (Germany)). In total, approximately 7 million people speak Slovak.
In order to properly represent all sounds, Slovak uses the Latin alphabet with a large number of additional letters. The total number of letters is a staggering 46! The additional letters are derived from existing letters and nearly all feature an acute accent, a circumflex, or a háček (ˇ); Á, Ä, Č, Ď, Dz, Dž, É, Ch, Í, Ĺ, Ľ, Ň, Ó, Ô, Ŕ, Š, Ť, Ú, Ý, Ž. The introduction of a new alphabet with a lot of extra letters flopped in Slovenia, but it was successful in Slovakia.
Even with 46 letters, Slovak does not hold the world record for languages that have one letter or character per sound. According to one language institute, Khmer, which is spoken in Cambodia, has 23 vowels and 33 consonants, which makes for a total of 56. Another language institute claims Khmer has 26 vowels, which would bring the total to 59. The Guinness Book of Records mentions a record number of 74, but this may be due to including double sounds. But no matter how we count, Khmer has more letters than Slovak.
